To visualise an irritated sciatic nerve, I like to use the comparative illustration of an angry cat who’s body is rigid and arched with fur standing on end. I then think of the image of the cat’s owner gently stroking it to calm it down. In a similar way to treat irritated sciatic nerve, a therapist will gently stroke a surrounding an irritated nerve fascia in order to calm the nerve down. When a cat is happy their posture is relaxed and not tense. By freeing up the sciatic nerve from a rigid surrounding fascia, pain can greatly be reduced.
